Dr. Herman Gibson, Jr.

Respected and beloved physician, Dr. Herman Gibson Jr, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017 at his home, surrounded by loved ones. Son of Herman and Carrie Clayton Gibson, he was born October 26, 1924, and raised in Clayton, Louisiana. In World War II, Dr. Gibson served in France and Germany in the Army Medical Corps. After the War, Herman graduated medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He established the Gibson Clinic in Ferriday, LA where he practiced for 62 years. During this time, he received multiple Lifetime Achievements Awards from Louisiana Rural Health Association, and was a treasure to his community. If there was an award for deliveries, he would have been at the top of the list. He also served as Mayor of Clayton, Coroner, and Chief of Staff at Concordia Parish Hospital. In addition to those accomplishments, he was an artist, author, craftsmen, musician, a great dancer, an avid fisherman, fond of traveling the West, and a member of the Ferriday riding club. He is survived by his son, Dr. Herman (Claire) Gibson III; his two grandchildren, Cody Gibson and Allison (Derek) Andrepont; and his great grandchild, Sy Andrepont. He is also survived by his second wife, Dr. Mary Bradford Gibson; children Angela (Steven) Kirkland and Lily (Ronnie) Wilson; grandchildren Stephanie (Jeff) Wright, Heathcliffe (Angel) Hailey, and Chasi (Christopher) Hailey-Malone; and his great grandchild, Cameron Malone. Likewise, he leaves behind his niece, Anna (Sam) Whittington, and nephews Clayton Gibson, Jr, Mark (Kris) Gibson and, Neal Gibson and honorary nephew, Jon Garner, as well as multiple great nieces and nephews; cousins Jim Sullivan, Pasty Sullivan Goltry, Carolee Clayton Smith, Diane Clayton Martin, and Larry Clayton. Dr. Gibson was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Carrie Clayton Gibson; his brother, Clayton Gibson; his sister-in-law, Lounez James Gibson; and his first wife, Mary Huggens Gibson. Funeral services for Dr. Herman Gibson, Jr., 92 of Ferriday, LA will be held at Young’s Funeral Home-Ferriday on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 10AM with Bro. Clyde Ray Webber officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery-Whitehall under the direction of Youngs Funeral Home. The family would like to give a special thanks to the constant and steady care of Camellia Hospice, with love to Penny, Angie, and Angela. Extended appreciation is also offered to Pat and Von Crook, and Suzanne Routon. Pallbearers: Clayton Gibson Jr., Neal Gibson, Mark Gibson, Jon Garner, Heathcliffe Hailey, Chris Malone, Cameron Malone, and Jeff Wright.
