Jane Plummer

Miss Jane was born May 13, 1915 in Bastrop, LA, to Stephen Benjamin Shell, and Jennie Rosalie Harrington Shell and grew up in Bastrop, LA. She passed away Monday, August 6, 2018, at Magnolia Village in Natchez, MS at age 103. She finished Normal College (Northwestern now) in 1936 with a bachelor's degree in education. Having taught school in Bonita, LA and Elm Grove, LA for a total of four years she decided to make a career change and moved to Indiana to become the wife of Joseph M. Plummer. She was a homemaker during the dozen years that followed before returning to her teaching profession at Portage (Indiana) high school. After her husband deceased in 1973, she moved back to Louisiana in 1979 and began a new phase of her life. She was active in the Episcopal church and enjoyed concerts and play performances during a few years in Monroe, LA. In 1983 she took responsibility of raising her granddaughter, Polly, and returned to her role of homemaker, moving first to Boutte, LA, and later to Camden, AR. After Polly left for college, Jane moved to Lake St. John, where her daughter, "Janie", resides, in 1999. She became an active member of the Episcopal church of the Good Shepherd in Vidalia, LA where she was active in the altar guild, served as reader, and was active in Sunday school. She was also an active member of the Ferriday Garden Club for several years. In 2010, at almost 95, she moved to an assisted living faciity when she could no longer drive her car. She rarely missed a Sunday. Her church friends would see that she had a ride to church. She was greatly loved by her church family, and the family she adopted at Magnolia Village. She called every staff member and every resident by their name. She was known for her pep talks and would not allow any moaning and complaining to take place in her presence. She was fully dressed and ready for her morning cup of coffee by 6 AM every day. Motivational speeches were her specialty, and she loved to solve word games and crossword puzzles. She was an avid reader of classics and biographies until the very end of her life - could read the small print without glasses if there was enough light. Her beautiful script penmanship in notes to her friends and family continued until only days before her life ended. Miss Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph Madison Plummer, and only son, Tammany Manford Plummer; sisters: Elizabeth Rogers, Annese Rogers Crew, and Millicent Shell, and niece: Elizabeth Crew Dixon. Survivors are her daughters: Jane Plummer Vaughan (and husband, Arthur "Al"), of Ferriday, LA and Mary Ann Burkhalter of Glendora, CA; Granddaughters: Amelia Louise "Amy" Davenport (and husband, John) of Placentia, CA, and Polly Marie Niemann (and husband Chris) of Hobart, IN; grandsons: Christopher Vaughan ( and wife, Susan) of Ferriday, LA, Gregory Vaughan of Dallas, TX, andJohn Burkhalter (and friend, Shelly Hughes) of Grand Terrace, CA; great-grandsons: Joseph Turner "Jay" Vaughan and William Christopher Vaughan of Ferriday, LA, Thomas Gregory Vaughan of Little Rock, AR, and Conner Joseph Niemann of Hobart, IN; great-grandaughters: Emily Caroline Vaughan of Little Rock, AR, Ashlee Stuehrmann (and husband Kevin) of Glendora , CA, and Jane Madison Burkhalter of Hesperia, CA; great-great granddaughters: Kailie and Avery Stuehrmann of Glendora, CA; nieces: Martha Jane Saxon of Fort Worth, TX and Alice Warren (and husband, Ken) of Mountain View, AR; nephew: Louis Crew (and wife, Mary) of Bethel, AK. Special thanks to the staff and many volunteers at Magnolia Village, Dr. Kenneth Stubbs, Deaconess, Hospice and Br. Vincent Ignatius, OSB from Trinity Episcopal Church. Graveside services conducted by Reverend James G. Benbrook will be at Christ Church Cemetery in Bastrop, LA, Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 2 PM.
